This past year marked significant growth and change to the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation. If you couldn’t join us at this year’s Annual General Meeting, here’s a look at what we accomplished together as a community.
454 new acres now under permanent protection through the donation of Westermain Woods and the acquisition of the Marianne Girling Nature Reserve.
754 total acres of protected land, including properties stewarded on behalf of the Ontario Heritage Trust.
8.5 kilometres of natural shoreline protected, preserving important wildlife habitat.
$3,000 awardedto two local high school students through the Harriet T. Weaver Bursary Fund.
Accelerating the Care of Protected Lands
Guest speaker Jill Murray-Dimic of the Ontario Conservation Accelerator (OCA) shared how the organization partners with land trusts to help move conservation forward. The OCA works closely with the Foundation and announced a $25,000 matching contribution to fund the long-term stewardship of our protected lands.
We’ll be sharing more soon about this exciting initiative and how your support can go twice as far in preserving the natural heritage of the Lake of Bays region.
Sharing the Story of Westermain Woods
The AGM concluded with The Story of Westermain Woods, a short film about the Foundation’s largest nature reserve and how it came to be. Thank you to Joan and Bob Lehman for being part of the video and sharing this important story with us.
