Silent Boat Rally, July 30

Bring your canoes, kayaks or paddleboards to Dwight Beach for an easy 8km round trip paddle on the beautiful Lower Oxtongue River up to Marsh's Falls. This is a fun event for all ages and an opportunity to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit this ecologically rich river valley. Cost $20 per person, lunch included. For more information or to register, please contact us at registration@lakeofbaysheritage.ca
Things to do in August

At every AGM, after the business portion of the meeting, we present the history of a selected community in the Lake of Bays area along with a video and printed guide. Heritage cottage owners receive commemorative plaques. Conducted near the featured community, the meeting usually includes a walking tour and visits to some heritage cottages. This year’s video and tour of the Wahawin community and Brae Heid, on Glenmount Road, includes some of the earliest cottages on the lake. August 13, 2022, Lake of Bays Sailing Club, 1111 Glenmount Road. Coffee 10:00 am, meeting 10:30 am, followed by lunch and tour. Photo above: Brae Heid by Gloria Woodside

Join a Mushroom Foray - August 20 or Sept 3
The best time to see varieties of wild mushrooms mainly depends on seasonal rain levels. Mark McLean will lead two Mushroom Forays on Saturday August 20 and Saturday September 3.  One will be at Marsh’s Falls, the other at an interesting location to be announced. This is a great opportunity to learn about mushrooms in general, and which kinds grow around Lake of Bays. To register or for further information, email registration@lakeofbaysheritage.ca.

Honouring Simon Miles for 37 years of service

Having served continuously on our board since he co-founded the Foundation in 1985, Simon Miles retired in 2021. He filled many roles, including President, Vice-President and Secretary. In recognition of his many contributions to preserving the heritage of Lake of Bays, a major donor has offered to match donations to the Foundation in honour of Simon up $10,000. All donations qualify for a tax receipt and should be identified as being “in honour of Simon Miles“.

Butterfly Count results

We had a successful butterfly count on July 10 at the Marsh's Falls Nature reserve.  A big thank you to Rick Stronks and the keen butterfly hunters who helped out. We are delighted to see families joining our nature events and hope to see even more next year.

Here are some of the species identified:
Crossline Skipper
Peck’s Skipper
Hobomok Skipper
Great Spangled Fritillary
In Memoriam: Jim Cade, 1949-2022
Foundation board member

Jim was a long time Lake of Bays cottager. He joined the Heritage Foundation board of directors in 2017. He brought wisdom, legal expertise, realism, a calm demeanour – and humour and warmth – to our discussions. He also provided invaluable leadership on some of the most complex issues that the Foundation has faced. We wish Jim’s family well in this difficult time. We will miss him.
Thank you to our donors

The generosity of our donors makes the Foundation's work in preserving the natural and community heritage of the Lake of Bays region possible. Welcome and thank you to our new annual members. Our thanks and appreciation to these permanent members for their recent donations:
