Annual General Meeting - recap
After two years of virtual meetings, it was wonderful to see everyone in person at our August 13 AGM at the Lake of Bays Sailing Club. Judith Mills presented the President’s report and outgoing Treasurer Mike Kaptein reviewed the financials. Fiscal 2022, which ended on April 30, was another good year for the Foundation.
New Directors
We are delighted to welcome Robert Little and Paul Shoniker to the Foundation Board. They each bring unique skills, experience and interests to the Board.  We hope they will find this volunteer opportunity a fulfilling and enjoyable one.
Harriet T. Weaver Trust
Two bursaries of $1,000 each were awarded in June to local students entering post-secondary programs related to the Foundation’s mandate. Thank you to Brink Weaver for his engaging talk at the AGM, for writing a book about the Glenmount area, and for encouraging donations to the Harriet T. Weaver Trust.
Featured Community - Wahawin
Each year we document the history of a Lake of Bays community with a video and booklet. This year we featured the Wahawin community and the exceptional Brae Heid stone cottage. They are on Glenmount Road, on the south shore of Lake of Bays, which includes some of the earliest cottages on the lake. Gloria Woodside and Paul Shoniker presented the video and the Built Heritage awards recognizing the owners of:

  • Wahawin, Marsha and David Kennedy, built 1904
  • Brae Heid, John, Donald and Jane Hogarth, built 1920
  • Pine Crest, Mike Miller and Susan Bowman, built 1925
  • Weavers Cove, Victoria and Brink Weaver, built 1949

An amazing walking tour (photo above) followed the meeting and lunch. Thank you to John, Donald and Jane Hogarth for the special tour of Brae Heid, Mike Miller for his outstanding tour and commentary of the Wahawin community, and Marsha and David Kennedy and Victoria and Brink Weaver who welcomed us into their cottages.
Marsh's Falls Nature Reserve (MFNR) - reminder

Anyone wishing to visit the Reserve must first register a request at https://www.lakeofbaysheritage.ca/MFNR. The link takes you to a set of frequently asked questions about MFNR followed by a registration button. After registering you will receive an email with an acknowledgement, information about access and parking, and a trail map.

New signs (see above) have been installed at our entrances on Highway 35 and Sale Road and also at the landing on the river below the falls. The signs include a QR code that takes you to the registration page on the Foundation website. If you haven’t registered in advance, we ask that you use this feature to do so just before entering the Reserve.

Winter Access: Use the Sale Road entrance for winter access. Look for the orange snow fence just past the first house on Sale Road. There is parking for two cars. The Highway 35 entrance will be closed for the winter.

Silent Boat Rally - returns
We're delighted to relaunch our popular silent boat rally after a two-year hiatius.  Twenty-eight eager paddlers joined the rally on the Lower Oxtongue River on July 30. Check out this great post (with photos) by one participant. Thank you Murat Vardar.

Mushroom Forays - results
Mark McLean’s two mushroom forays were very popular this summer.  Conditions were superb for the Sept 3 foray on Crown land about 20 minutes south of Dorset off Highway #35.  No bugs, sunshine and lots of mushrooms! We found 56 species: 10 unidentified, 4 genus identified and 42 species identified. It helped to have several sharp-eyed people to find that many species (photo above)! The Aug 21 foray was at the Marsh’s Falls Nature Reserve. It was a lovely morning for a walk through the Reserve. Although the mushrooms were not numerous, we did see 30 species in all.

Thank you to our donors
The generosity of our donors makes the Foundation's work in preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Lake of Bays region possible. We have received many contributions since our last report in July.

Our thanks and appreciation to these permanent members for their large donations:

A major donor is matching donations up to up $10,000.  Read about Simon’s accomplishments here.  The campaign is still on. All donations qualify for a tax receipt and should be identified as being “in honour of Simon Miles“.
We thank the many donors who contributed to the Harriet T. Weaver Trust by purchasing Brink Weaver’s book about the Glenmount area.

Welcome and thank you to the several new annual members who have joined us.
