Early summer sees the greatest diversity of butterfly species at the Marsh's Falls Nature Reserve. Rick and Kelly Stronks return to lead this event on Saturday June 29. Start time is 9:00AM and it will end around noon.
The weather for our annual Dr. Cathy Charles Bird Count on Saturday, May 18, at the Marsh’s Fall Nature Reserve was perfect with comfortable temperatures and not too many biting
insects! An enthusiastic group of 5 volunteers, led by Rick and Kelly Stronks, amassed a total of45 species of birds either seen or heard. This year a volunteer paddled the Oxtongue River and submitted an impressive 36 species count.
The highlights include:
14 species of warblers including the uncommon Canada Warbler
4 singing Winter Wrens
a nesting Eastern Phoebe
a pair of Pine Siskins
and Red Crossbills which may indicate these two species are nesting on the property
Other observations include Painted Turtles basking on a log, an Eastern Pine Elfin (an early spring butterfly), trilliums blooming and a few False Morels.
The ‘See Muskoka Through Our Eyes’ First Annual Powwow – the first outside a reservation and open to everyone including (especially!) families with kids – is coming up at Annie Williams Memorial Park in Bracebridge on June 29-30. Organized by a team from several Indigenous nations, the activities include traditional dancing, singing, and drumming workshops, knowledge sharing presentations, craft and food vendors. Also, a community
social event on Saturday June 29 at 7-10 pm and, for early risers, a Sunrise Ceremony at 5:34 am on June 29.
The Powwow is part of National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize the rich history, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Under the leadership of Mayor Terry Glover, the Township of Lake of Bays has contributed $1000 to support the event. The Foundation will match the Township with a donation of $1000.
